The English Chess Federation National Schools Girls Championship is the top chess UK tournament for teams of girls. On Sunday two teams from Howell’s Juniors and one team from the Seniors took part in the Southern UK semi-final and all three teams of three players qualified for the Final. This event will take place over two days during the Easter holidays and will be hosted by St.Catherine’s School, near Guildford.
There were 17 teams in the U19 event and 30 in the U11s. The Howell’s A team came 1st in both U11 and U19 events, and the U11B team came 4th. The U19s team of Alyssa Wang, Shayanna Sivarajasingam and Neya Govindaraj scored a remarkable 14 points out of a possible 15, coming 1st ahead of the 2014 Champions. The U11A team of Venetia Sivarajasingam, Susanna Fraser and Emily Wang achieved a perfect score! The U11B team of Nayana Kalavala, Grace Eddy and Nandini Prasad scored 10 out of 15.
Chess teacher Kevin Thomas said today “These team performances are fantastic – these are all extremely talented players and it is also testament to the hard work they have put in over many years. When they are playing for each other in a team it brings out the best in them. No other school in Britain has anything like this number of teams proceeding to the Finals. Many thanks to the parents for their huge support.”
