Schools Chess Day in Cardiff Results

 Schools Chess Day, Cardiff          Photos

The first “Schools Chess Day” took place yesterday at the Cardiff City Football Stadium – and proved a huge success with pupils, teachers, parents, and all who attended.

The massive Sytner Lounge on the top floor with its splendid view of the pitch was the ideal location for the 32 teams of 10 players (plus a few reserves) who took part. The players’ behaviour was exemplary: they concentrated hard and battled fiercely but with good sportsmanship to opponents and arbiters alike.

The teams each played 5 separate matches against other schools (using the Swiss Pairing System, ie always playing another team on the same or similar score) and the positions were decided by Match Points, using Game Points if necessary.

Prizes were awarded to all the players (including reserves) of the top 6-placed teams and all the participating schools were given certificates to distribute to their players.  Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who took part.

Many thanks to all the following without whom the event would not have been such a success:

  • Levy Restaurants for allowing us to use the venue at a greatly reduced price.
  • Cardiff City Football Team for helping with publicity shots and bringing along the club mascot !
  • Kevin Staveley for his help in planning this event and for arbiting it on the day.
  • The small army of volunteer helpers who set up, cleared away, and kept the matches all running smoothly on the tightest of schedules. John Thornton, Ian Eustis, Olivia Smith, Bill Harle, Stuart Hutchings, Joe Fathallah, Hugh Price, Frank Norman, Guy Wagner, Bob Hurn, Matthew Staniforth, and Alex Bullen.
  • The Welsh Chess Union for subsidising the event and providing the trophies.
  • Chess in Schools and Communities for providing all the medals and badges.
  • The Teachers and Headteachers of all the Schools for your interest and enthusiasm. We are delighted that chess is going well in your school but we also know it takes considerable effort to support that and arrange outings like this.
