Glorney Gilbert Report

Glorney Gilbert 2010
The tournament was held this year in the University of Glamorgan, just outside Pontypridd.
For the first time in four years the tournament was properly organised with all teams playing a double round all play all. (Naturally, we were organising!) The continental teams have made it abundantly clear that they do not want to participate if they have to pay for their own accommodation, as has been the case since 2006. This has now been recognised and the four home countries are reconciled to playing among themselves, although I did hear a wild rumour that Sweden were interested!
We fielded the strongest Glorney team that we have had for some years, with all the players graded over 1800, but we are still not on a par with our rivals and, again, we came last by a considerable distance. The girls also came last, but by a much closer margin and the games were closer than the score suggests. They are all young and I envisage us playing on an equal footing in this tournament in the near future.
The Under 14 team benefited from experience, five of them having played last year.
They drew with Scotland and lost to a very strong England team before storming into
second place, beating Ireland 4.5 to 1.5 twice and Scotland 5-
The final scores were as follows:
Glorney England 19.5, Scotland 19, Ireland 17.5, Wales 4.
Gilbert England 12.5, Scotland 11.5, Ireland 7, Wales 5.
Under 14 England 30.5, Wales 20, Scotland 13.5, Ireland 8.
Under 12 England 25.5, Ireland 19, Wales 14, Scotland 13.5.
