24 players turned up for the annual Penarth Chess Club Invitation Lightning tournament

(10 seconds a move) in memory of former player Keith Williams.

The tournament was run as usual very quietly and efficiently by Peter Watkins.

Despite the snow which took away a couple of entries, there were players from Barry, Bridgend, Caerphilly and Cardiff in addition to the players from Penarth.

John Thornton (Caerphilly) 4.5/5 came from behind in the last round beating Cardiff junior Alex Wills into 2nd place on 4. Penarth junior James Thomas was 1/2 point behind in 3rd place.

A good array of food was consumed between rounds 2 and 3, and all players went home with a prize.

Beryl Hughes and the Penarth club should be thanked for putting on a very worthwhile Christmas event.

The Penarth club meets on Mondays at the Penarth Conservative club, with matches starting at 7:30pm. Currently the club runs three 5-board teams, but are hoping for an extra couple of members which would mean they could run another team next season.
